On Friday, 22 March 2019 the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete opened the retrospective exhibition "Valerios Caloutsis: Transformations of a Landscape".
The exhibition, curated by art historian Christopher Marinos, featured over 120 works that span seven decades, from the early 1950s to the late 2000s.
A lover of nature with a profound environmental conscience, Valerios Caloutsis (1927-2014) was among the first Greek artists to delve into the question of environmental degradation. A romantic contemplation of (Cretan) nature, the texture of soil, rocks, sea bottoms, mountains and the sea, the movement and glow of light, the multiple aspects of human communication, the idea of artificial nature, the incessant changes of a landscape through geological transformations as well as the aerial views and relief renderings of a location are some of the subjects he tackled in his multifaceted work.
The works included in this exhibition reflected the evolution of a restless painter who employed various media (painting, kinetic works, drawing, collage) to convey in many different ways the reality around him. It is precisely this varied and reflective approach of Caloutsis that his retrospective aims to reveal.
During the exhibition, which run through the 16th of June 2019, guided tours and educational programmes were reilized.
On the occasion of this Valerios Caloutsis retrospective, a bilingual book about the artist and his work will be published by futura later this year.
