The circle of life
Philip Tsiaras. Chris Doulgeris
On August 20, 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete opened the exhibition “The circle of life”, with works by Philip Tsiaras and Chris Doulgeris. The show examined places and space across the history of contemporary art, and the transcendence of reality under the surrealist gaze of the two artists.
Philip Tsiaras, who lives and works in the USA, re-creates images of reflection, using memories from the fluid element to put together the memory of the universe. The show condensed a retrospection with works from the ”SUPEREAL” series, which was shown at the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and the StellaArt Foundation inMoscow, and his new series “The circle of life “.
Chris Doulgeris contrasts material from his 1990s photo archive of Rethymnon with current photos of the very same subjects. The points captured by the lens of Doulgeris are treated as sites of everyday life.
The exhibition included also a joint part of the work of the two artists; it consists in some of the Rethymnon photos of Doulgeris which Tsiaras reprocesses with photomontage, adding his own circles of life to the everyday life of the buildings.
The exhibition came with a bilingual catalogue and is kindly sponsored by Concord Consulting Services.
The two artists featured also as both photographers and curators in the exhibition Ithaca returned, which was organised and presented as part of the Return to Ithaca 2013 Festival and is now hosted at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete. This is a selection of works by Greek and international artists on the subject of travelling, transformation, wandering.

The exhibitions run through the end of November, 2013.
