Since Thursday, November 10, 2022 the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete is holding the two exhibitions, showcasing works from its permanent collection as well as works by other artists, entitled L. Kanakakis. Every day’s precious and Heterogeneities. New acquisitions, under the curation of Maria Marangou and Kostas Christidis.

The Contemporary Art Museum of Crete’s exhibition consists of two sections, attempting to arrange diverse creative methodologies and expressive modes around a series of conceptual axes, bringing together older and newer acquisitions of the permanent collection.

The first section is dedicated to the works of Lefteris Kanakakis, which form the nucleus of the Museum’s collection. The second section revolves around the concept of Heterogeneity and is made of works that have been recently added to the Museum’s collection, reflecting the concerns and tendencies of contemporary art.

Lefteris Kanakakis practices his art in an era of intense confrontations and changes in the field of socio-political ideas, artistic creation and cultural conditions. His attitude towards all this is justifiably admirable as he maintains a stoic and highly critical and reflective attitude –which ultimately vindicates him. Like all sensitive artists, Kanakakis is aware of the current developments, all across the public sphere, but does not err and stays faithful to his inner vision. And this because he consciously carries within himself the great tradition of his homeland’s values, the big and small moments of everyday life that have defined him.

As regards the new acquisitions of the Museum, they display a wide range of meanings/messages and their respective methodologies of expression. Contemporary artistic activity reconstitutes and critically reviews the stakes and irrationalities of the time, establishes new conceptual links and matrices of questions about the real, the utopian, homogenization and inter-human relations. Heterogeneity, as concept and meaning, acquires a special dimension and value as it proves to be an effective condition against the tendency of certain dominant politico-economic theories for homogeneity and standardization.

The present exhibition explores on the one hand Lefteris Kanakakis’ concern and love for the world of objects and materiality, in the name of a modern humanism, and on the other hand places him in a position of dialogue with the new acquisitions of the permanent collection, seeking to provide the conditions for a another “reading” and interpretive approach.

The following artists take part in the exhibition:
