The Wreck of Serenity
Maria Loizidou
The exhibition “The Wreck of Serenity” by Maria Loizidou was hosted in the Warehouse of the Artillery in the Fortezza Castle of Rethymno.
Conceptualism along with sculpture, plasticity when it comes to form, material sensitivity and both political and human emotion – for reference please see Cyprus – constitute a coherent and intense visual experience.
The exhibition included a great amount of Ms. Loizidou's work, who is little known to the Greek public and conveysin her new artwork entitled “the Wreck of Serenity” a metaphorical meaning derived from the two small Roman figurines under the name “the Shipwreck of Agia Galini”. These findings from a recent archaeological excavation are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.
Maria Loizidou presented her intervention in the exterior of the Fortezza Castle.
The exhibition was organized by the Rethymno Centre for Contemporary Art (today's Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete) with the financial support of the Cultural Services of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.
It was complemented by a bilingual catalogue featuring a text by Maria Marangou and remained open to the public until 15 July 2002.
