For its summer session 2005, the Rethymnon Centre for Contemporary Art (Contemporary Art Museum of Crete) organized an exhibition of the prominent Greek sculptor Georges Lappas, opening on Saturday the 14th of May 2005 at the Art Space “8” (Himaras 8 - Rethymnon).
Lappas ‘s sculpture has always been particularly sensitive and responsive to the architectural space. For his show at the Rethymnon Centre for Contemporary art he presented eight of his major ‘red’ works, most of them coming from important collections. This group of works was exhibited together for the first time, in a very intricate and tightly knit relationship with the tripartite structure of the gallery space.
Lappas has exhibited extensively both in Greece and abroad in major exhibitions such as: The Venice Biennale *Aperto 1988, Greek Pavillon 1990), Sao Paolo Biennale (1987), Metropolis (Berlin 1991), Everything That’s Interesting is New (Dakis Joannou Collection 1996), Outlook (Athens 2003), Monument to Now (Dakis Joannou Collection 2004) etc. His work has also been shown in the galleries Lehman-Maupin in New York, Baronian in Brussels, Tanit in Munich and Bernier/Eliades in Athens.
The Rethymnon Centre for Contemporary Art, situated in the medieval part of the old city of Rethymnon in Crete, forms part of a network of public cultural centres in Greece which specialises in the support and promotion of current contemporary art practice on national and international level. Under the direction of Maria Marangou it has, since 1995, organised numerous solo and group exhibitions.
There was also a new catalogue, in Greek and English language, accompanying the exhibition.
The exhibition remained open until 28th of August 2005.
As with all projects of the Rethymnon Centre for Contemporary Art, guided tours and educational programmes were offered throughout the duration of the exhibition.
