Works of the Rethymnian painter L. Kanakakis
Curator: Maria Marangou

This is a large series with works which were executed by the painter during the dictatorship in Greece or refer to the sufferings of the Greek people in those years (1967-1974). The Kouros and the box/coffin with the Greek flag is meant as a sign of mourning and a tribute to the fallen students during the uprising at the Athens Technical University. A milestone in the recent history of Greece, this uprising of November 17, 1973 led to the collapse of the colonels" junta and its anniversary is now a national holiday. The rest of Kanakakis"s works are everyday objects, still lifes and nudes.
