As part of the mood for new experimental expressions in the loft, the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete presents from Wednesday, May 10, 2023, the exhibition with works by Christoforos Doulgeris, entitled Matter Anonymous.
The artist with a new approach presents a part of his new work curated by art historian, Stavros Kavallaris.
As the curator of the exhibition describes in his text …. Doulgeris’ printings, although they are committed to color sensation, confront us with a certain psychological complexity, which makes them much more than an untrammeled delight for the eye. Paradoxically, however, color gains a richer role as its energies shift the narrative focus from material texture and emotional accent to a printer’s symbolic “personality” as a humanly controlled phenomenon of objects-symbols steeped in a visible disposition.
…It is this very personality which makes Doulgeris to create a hybridization of an illusionistic pictorial space. The contoured stretcher provides a literal emphasis on the physical properties of a soon-to-die printer, despite any given geometric stability of the imagery, while understanding the ambiguity of volume and flat plane. It is as if we here deal with the reversal of conventional pictorial illusionism into a denotative metaphor of the exhaustion of one kind and its replacement by a different expressionistic mode.
…Hence, matter becomes the vehicle for either a single concentrated image configuration or in serial runs and sets. There is a sense of a rhythmically repeating imagery or diversified scale. The repetition of imagery and the element of deliberate vacancy or inertial stasis purge the old sentimental content of art, while focusing on a vision and purpose more anonymous.
The duration of the exhibition will be until 30 November 2023.
