The Contemporary Art Museum of Crete in the context of its artistic activities, created once more a dialogue between two cultures, Greece and Korea, providing an opportunity of making the acquaintance of Asian artists.
The central feature of this dialogue was the exhibition: “Paper Moon” which was inaugurated on Friday, June 1 with the participation of international artists curated by Dir. Thalia Vrachopoulos, who lives and works in New York City.

The exhibition used as a contradictory element the title of an old Greek song Paper Moon by composer Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1994) with lyrics by Nikos Gatsos (1911-1992). The song was written in 1949 for the play A Streetcar named Desire by Tennessee Williams which was staged at Theatro Technis of Karolos Koun with Melina Merkouri in the leading role (more information at www.cca.gr).

Hanji Fashion Show
Another outstanding feature, the “Hanji Fashion Show was presented on Thursday, May 31at 09.00 pm at the Mikrassiaton Square, in the old city of Rethymnon. The “Hanji Fashion Show” has been recognized as a unique event which reflects the emotional world of the Korean people and has been invited by 20 countries in Europe, Asia and the U.S.A.
The creative team of the Hanji Fashion Show presented Korean culture in garments, using as main element in the creation of the clothes, the traditional hand-made paper Hanji.
The creations from Hanji paper highlight the tangible and intangible features of the Korean civilization. The architecture, painting, nature and spiritual heritage of the country are reflected on the creations of the team.
This special event gave the opportunity to the public to understand the Korean tradition around “hanji” paper as well as the emotional world of the Koreans.

Hanji paper is made of the internal bark of Paper Mulberry, a tree which comes from Korea and grows on the country’s rocky mountains, known in Korean as dak.
It appeared in various forms in ancient Korea. It was used as writing paper, in constructions of everyday use, for bandages or in the making of books (because of its durability).
The show was accompanied by the sweet melodies of musician Miss Kang Sung Mi playing the traditional musical instrument Gayageum.
