International Museum Day 2021: “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine”
Event title: “See you at the museum…”

With the theme “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine” the International Council of Museums (ICOM) was encouraging museums around the world to celebrate this year International Museum Day; “This is a pivotal moment for our society, and we call museums to embrace it and lead the change”. Museums were invited to take action on:

  • Digital transformation focusing on education
  • New business models development aimed at sustainability
  • Climate change
  • Social concerns management, embracing practices that facilitate dialogue and co-creation with their local communities.

The Contemporary Art Museum of Crete celebrates the International Museum Day attempting to interpret part of its permanent collection while taking into consideration the above mentioned. You are invited to take a tour through the exhibition “Paper. Designs, watercolors, engravings, photographs, installations” , curated by Maria Marangou, seeking for answers to questions like:

  • Which artworks address social issues? Which social issues constitute local concerns?
  • Which artists communicate environmental concerns? How are these concerns depicted in their artworks?
  • How is contemporary art related to alternative economic models? Which artworks demonstrate this link?
  • Why should the museum sector undergo digital transformation?

while posing your queries.

Our aim was to generate dialogue related to new roles museums are called to play and how the CCA is gradually transitioning into them. What is more, having your support, we anticipate to better understand community concerns and efficiently contribute in managing new challenges our local community is facing, particularly during the pandemic.
