The 18th of May has been designated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) as International Museum Day. The event celebrates Museums as an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, as part of the celebrations for “International Museum Day 2015” and on the occasion of the exhibition Flying over the Abyss it currently hosted, orginized a guided tour for students of the Dept of Preschool Education of the University of Crete on Monday, May 18, 2015.

The exhibition was held in collaboration with the NEON Organisation for Culture & Development. Curated jointly by Maria Marangou, Art Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, and Art Historian Dimitris Paleokrassas, the exhibition traced man’s course from life to death, based on —and inspired by— Nikos Kazantzakis’s Ascesis: The Saviours of God.

Thirty-three works by 26 artists engage in dialogue among themselves as well as with Ascesis, shedding light on the course of human life from the trauma of birth, the struggle for life and creativity through to death. The works in the show were presented in seven thematic units: Genesis/Trauma, Transcending the Abyss, From Creativity to Eternity, Touching the Other, Twilight, Return to the Abyss.

The works were on loan from the D Daskalopoulos Collection and it was the first time they were exhibited in Greece on this scale.

The guided tour was given by Dr Constantinos Christidis and was open to the public.
