On the occasion of “Whispers”, the exhibition curated by Maria Marangou, the works come to life through Performance Art.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete and its Education Section - Workroom of Fine Arts collaborated with the 1st EPAL School of Rethymnon on "Bringing persons and paintings to life",a carnival event for adults and children on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 on the Museum’s premises.
Art teacher Ms Elissavet Vivilaki and her students, having worked in class on Andriana Molder’s Two Friends (2015; courtesy of Donopoulos IFA Gallery), gave their own interpretation of the painting through performance art.
The figures in Molder’s work came to life through the students’ artistic intervention; they became the mother and daughter who are experiencing a difficult relationship since the mother has abandoned her child. The viewers were called upon to decide on the future of this relationship, and the girls presented two potential solutions to the drama using the lyrics from Eminem’s “I hate my mom” and a new beginning (“We are the world”; the Spyros Lambrou Children’s Choir).
The symbolisms were clear in the students’ hands and bodies, with the apple in the negative scenario and the candle in the positive one, making for a truly moving story!
Our young friends made palm masks and collages with paper streamers, while they had their faces cheerfully painted by girls from the 1st EPAL.
We wish to express our warm thanks to Ms Evangelia Seiragaki, Director of the 1st EPAL, Mr Nikolaos Vassilopoulos, Director of SEK Rethymnis, Ms Elissavet Vivilaki and her students, and Mr Stelios Rokounakis for the loan of his velvety creation.
